Empowering journalism, Inspiring change!

The Power of Journalism

Dear Gender Justice Journalists, Activists and Friends,

Welcome to our very first newsletter, thank you for subscribing, and being really patient while we got ready to send you regular updates. Now that we are virtually here (in your inboxes), we promise to send you regular updates, and news of what we have been up to as IJSC and give you previews of our flagship reports, and research publications.

At IJSC, we believe in the power of journalism as the fourth estate to support and advance a healthy democracy. As a global community, we have collectively witnessed the rapid changes, and increasing shift to the far right in many countries around the world. We have also seen how commercial pressures, resource cuts, and redundancies have threatened and limited journalistic practice, stalling the advancement of social change.

What we know for sure is that if we continue to do things the same old ways, we shall have the same old results. Results which have led to the roll back of human rights, and resulted in crises the world over. To solve new problems, we believe we need creative, multi-disciplinary approaches to advance social change, which is what we do as IJSC.

So, if you are just hearing of The Institute for Journalism and Social Change for the first time, we would like to welcome you and offer you a front row seat at the intersections of journalism, activism, and research. We are a global initiative bringing together journalists, researchers and activists to work in innovative and inclusive ways.  Think of us as a leader in the global media landscape, working within a trifecta of education, practice and community.

As an institute, our mission and ambitions include providing hands-on practical training, publications, research and convenings that will support journalists, and policymakers scale up impact, enhance innovation and consequently advance our journalistic purpose of supporting democracies. We are also tackling the critical challenges that threaten civil liberties. From organised anti-gender movements affecting women and LGBT rights to corporate hegemonies that perpetuate injustice and rights abuses.

Our intention is to provide an international infrastructure for impactful, sustainable, catalytic change. We will do this through connecting journalism education to practice, as well as by incubating journalistic innovations. The media can help foster an equitable world. We invite you to join our community.

‘Until Every Body Is Free’ press briefing

In partnership with Purposeful, the world’s first Africa-rooted hub, resourcing girls’ and young feminist activism all over the world, and Fòs Feminista, the worldwide alliance for sexual and reproductive justice for women, girls and gender-diverse people, IJSC is proud to announce the co-publication of ‘Until Every Body Is Free’, a landmark publication which draws lessons on strategy from 18-months of learning exchanges with feminist activists resisting rights threats across Africa. The report contains in-depth case studies document creative and strategic feminist resistance to threats in four countries – Côte D’Ivoire, Ghana, The Gambia and Sierra Leone. New follow-the-money analysis also reflects what they’re up against – including new evidence revealing how ‘progressive’ funding ended up benefiting an anti-abortion group. The report also identifies upcoming threats including from Mormon actors expanding in West Africa, and the ‘Strengthening Families’ conference coming next to Sierra Leone.

If you are a journalist, storyteller or content creator, and interested in reporting on this report join our press briefing on 20th May.
